we want to make a large window between the family room and kitchen and make a overhang bar that extends into the kitchen where we can sit with bar stools. Is that difficult and expensive.

I have done this several times. You will need to add support to carry the load the wall carried before you removed it.

If you want a smooth ceiling between the kitchen and family room, you will need to put a beam in the attic above wall before you remove the wall. The ceiling joist are hung to the beam with metal hangers. Then repair the sheet rock and texture, you will have a smooth ceiling from the family room to the kitchen.

If you want an Arch below the ceiling, separating the kitchen ceiling from the family room ceiling, you need to place a support to hold up the ceilings on each side of the wall to be removed. Once the supports are in place, remove the wall and install a beam to hold up the ceiling joist. Once the beam is in place, you can remove the supports on each side of the beam and proceed to frame in the arch.

Either method will require that you add studs to the wall on each end of the beam to hold up the beam. Also you must go under the house and directly under the wall studs holding up the beam, pour a cement circle 18" in diameter and 6 inches high, then place a vapor barrier over the cement and then a pier block between the cement you just poured and the floor.

If you don’t provide the support under the floor, the floor around the studs holding up the beam will slowly sink because of the weight being concentrated in a small spot instead of distributed like it was when the wall was still in place.

I have a huge basement apartment that I have just painted all white. (it was two tone lime green with a wainscotting board when I moved in) It is looking huge and gorgeous now. I have used the open concept and treating it like a loft………..with low ceilings!!! about 6 feet high.
Now so far I have used all blacks, whites, greys and silvers. The gas fireplace chimney is black and the bar which is my kitchen table is also painted high gloss black (has stainless steel bar stools) with the kitchen cupboards the same. Very kewl hardware as well.
I added food grade stainless steel to the counter tops and it looks great. The back splash is magnetic metal and very useful. The old refrigerator is now wallpapered in an anygliptic paper and painted silver, huge improvement. I curtained off the entry way with triple fullness for privacy and used ‘I’ beam for easy opening.
Now for my question, what color should I use for an accent color to add some real punch? I want it sophisticated with a funky twist. The kitchen has a picture of an old Jazz Singer in a black frame hanging from a ribbon over the sink with ‘Jazz Cafe’ in wood letters around it. So you have a feel for what I have done now I need a punch of color.
What do you suggest? Thanks for any ideas.

1] how about the colors in the Jazz Singer?
2] or add favorite bright or vivid color[s] to the apt. –
hot pink
cherry or tomato red
peach or coral [ not orange = too Halloween ]
lemon
lime or kelly
turquoise
sky or smoke blue
lavender or purple
3] in accessories –
drapes or curtains
bedding
pillows
lamps, shades
sidechair
ornaments
art, wall hangings
candles, candlesticks
4] or mix it up a bit – example;
lots of red in living area, with a bit of yellow and blue; lot of yellow in kitchen with a bit of blue and red; lots of blue in bed area with a bit of red and yellow.

We recently bought a house and since then, my mother-in-law has constantly been trying to decorate it. Her style is NOT my ideal. We recently had an argument over whether there should be bar stools at the island in the kitchen (she said yes, I said no). She thinks we need a bigger table (a glass top, even though we have 2 boys under 4) and she doesn’t like our curtains (which I made and my husband and I love). She’s always buying things she thinks we need for the house (sometimes expecting us to pay her back, even though we never told her to buy them and really didn’t want them). She’s bought god-awful drapes, that are just sitting in our closet because I think they’re hideous (and I’ve told her so). The most recent is that she has bought a set of bar stools for our kitchen (which I didn’t want, and she knows that) for a birthday present for my husband. Oh yes, it’s a birthday present, so she knows I won’t say anything against it. How can I get her to butt out without hurting her?

to invite her into my shopping plans for my decorating. This may or may not work but it is worth a try. I think that she wants her imput to count. Sounds like she is bored with her own decorating. Suggest that this spring you could volunteer to help her redecorate her place if she would like. Tell her of your likes and dislikes as far as decorating goes. As far as the bar stools, hmmm if I had a cellar I would have a bar built and place them there!
Or try sitting her down and telling her that you appreciate all that she has done, but this is something that you and your husband has looked forward to doing on your own.

Good luck.

I have a great kitchen that has a bar area that I’ll be adding bar stools to at some point. It is a very open area, and is great, but the wall from the kitchen that is right next to it has this horrible phone jack ( we don’t have a landline) the space is very narrow. I bought a thin painting, but unfortunately, it’s not thin enough for the wall! agh! I’ve thought of putting a vase or something like that in the area, but don’t know what else to decorate with. I’ve never had a bar area before and would like to make it look cute. Sorry if I did a horrible job of explaining it!

Sorry I’m no good at decorating. I think you should sum up the answers you recieve and take it from there. Good luck !
